Foil Stamping
What is Foil Stamp Printing?
Foil stamp printing is the process of printing with a foil instead of ink. Metallic foils are most commonly used because of their reflective properties, variety of colours, and lower price (especially compared to real gold leaf).
In the ‘printing’ process, a thin layer of foil is placed between the product surface and a stamp (a metal die engraved with text and/or graphics). The die is heated and pressed onto the product. The heat and pressure binds the foil to the product, with a slight indent (deboss), in areas where the engravings mate with the foil. The loose foil is then removed, leaving behind a luxurious and shiny finish.
Our Step by Step Guide
- Design Creation – we use graphic design software to prepare your text and any additional graphics needed for your specific order.
- Die “Stamp” Creation – your custom designs are etched/engraved into a metal plate – a process which actually removes areas of metal that are not part of the design. Normally, several designs are etched onto a single metal plate. Then the plate is cut and separated into individual dies (stamps). A single foil stamp print requires at least one die, but may require more. Several dies are typically required for a single order.
- Position and Heat the Die – secure the die to the machine and heat.
- Position Foil & Paper – Select and insert foil and paper into the machine.
- Press the stamp – Press the die onto the foil and paper. The heat and pressure bonds the foil to the surface of your product.
- Quality Check – After your design is applied, it is checked for quality and alignment issues.
- Order Fulfillment! – Once we’ve confirmed the print quality, we begin printing to fulfill your order. We usually deliver within 6-8 weeks from receiving your order.
Equipment & Supplies Needed for Foil Stamping
Computer – a computer with graphic design software utilizing Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop are used to create your custom design details.
Die-Cutting Machine – a die cutting machine is used to etch out your details onto a metal die.
Dies – a die block is a block of metal that, once engraved, is used to bond the foil to the surface of your card. This is known as the “stamp”.
Foil Press Machine – We use a type of press known as a ‘clamshell’ press and it’s operation is defined above.
Foils – There are a few different types of foils available on the market, but we typically use metallic foils as they are the “gold standard” for invitations.
-
- Metallic Foils: used to produce a silver, gold, or copper appearance.
- Pigment Foils: can be used to achieve a non-metallic glossy or matte look.
- Pearl Foils: used to achieve a subtler, almost transparent shine without added color.
- Holographic Foils: used to achieve a holographic or rainbow appearance in the presence of light.
